त्वमेव प्रत्यक्षं ब्रह्मासि। त्वामेव प्रत्यक्षं ब्रह्म वदिष्यामि।

ऋतं वदिष्यामि। सत्यं वदिष्यामि। तन्मामवतु।

तद्वक्तारमवतु। अवतु माम्। अवतु वक्तारम्।

ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥

Transliteration:

Om sham no mitrah sham varuṇah. Sham no bhavatvaryamaa.

Sham na indro brihaspatih. Sham no viṣṇururukramah.

Namo brahmaṇe. Namaste vaayo.

Tvameva pratyakṣham brahmaasi. Tvaameva pratyakṣham brahma vadishyaami.

Rtam vadishyaami. Satyam vadishyaami. Tanmaamavatu.

Tadvaktaaramavatu. Avatu maam. Avatu vaktaaram.

Om shaantih shaantih shaantih.

Meaning:

Om! May Mitra be propitious to us. May Varuna be propitious to us.

May Aryaman be propitious to us. May Indra and Brihaspati be propitious to us.

May Vishnu of vast strides be propitious to us.

Salutations to Brahman. Salutations to Thee, O Vayu.

Thou art indeed the visible Brahman. Thee alone will I declare as the visible Brahman.

I will declare the right. I will declare the truth. May that protect me.

May that protect the speaker. Protect me. Protect the speaker.

The Study of Phonetics

शिक्षां व्याख्यास्यामः।

वर्णः स्वरः। मात्रा बलं।

साम सन्तानः। इत्युक्तः शिक्षाध्यायः।

Transliteration:

Shiksham vyakhyasyaamah.

Varnaḥ svaraḥ. Maatraa balam.

Saama santaanah. Ityuktah shikshaadhyaayah.

Meaning:

We will expound the study of phonetics (Shiksha).

The letters, accents, quantity, strength, modulation, and union are to be explained.

Thus, is declared the chapter on phonetics.

भूत्यै न प्रमदितव्यम्।

Transliteration:

Acharyaaya priyam dhanamaahṛitya.

Prajatantum maa vyavachchhetsiiḥ.

Satyaan na pramaditavyam.

Dharmaan na pramaditavyam.

Kushalaan na pramaditavyam.

Bhootyai na pramaditavyam.

Meaning:

Having brought dear wealth to the teacher,

do not cut off the line of progeny.

Do not swerve from truth.

Do not swerve from duty.

Do not neglect personal welfare.

Do not neglect prosperity.

Maatṛ-devo bhava. Pitṛ-devo bhava.

Aachaarya-devo bhava. Atithi-devo bhava.

Meaning:

Do not neglect the study and teaching of the Vedas.

Do not neglect the duties to the gods and ancestors.

Revere your mother as a god. Revere your father as a god.

Revere your teacher as a god. Revere your guest as a god.

Yathaa-h vaai tadaacharitavyam.

Eṣha aadeshah. Eṣha upadeshah.

Eṣhaa vedopaniṣat.

Etadanushaasanam.

Evam-upaasitavyam.

Evam-upaasyaṁ.

Meaning:

As is the command, so indeed one should conduct oneself.

This is the injunction. This is the teaching.

This is the secret of the Vedas.

This is the instruction.

Thus should one meditate.

Thus should one act.
